* This is a beautifully preserved female tortoise fossil of _Stylemys nebracensis_. It slowly plodded over the temperate area of South Dakota about 30 million years ago in an area known as the White River Badlands of South Dakota. Today the badlands are a series of highly eroded hills and gullies of light colored sedimentary layers. _Stylemys_ was the first species of fossil tortoise to be discovered and described in North America.
* Dimensions: 20 inches, 51 cm (length) x 16 inches, 41cm (width) x 7 inches, 17.8 cm (height), weight = 92.4 lb. or 42 kilograms. Minimal restoration - It also has fossilized leg bones.
* Name: _Stylemys nebrascensis_
Geologic Age: Oligocene (30-35 Million Years Old)
Locale: Brule Formation, White River Badlands Group, South Dakota
