"Lumière" is a series of light installations that project moving images onto the inner surface of its suspended, round glass bulbs. Powered by custom-built projectors that can change, update, and add new images, the light acts as a medium for the evocation of memories that range from the serene to the sublime. As with other projects by Commonplace, the Lumière lamps invoke the history of cinema by referring both to the French word for light and to the pioneering French brothers who created the first motion picture in 1895\\. The projections onto the lamps inner, rounded surface produces an eerie yet magical effect not unlike that of a fortune teller's crystal ball, invoking the sense of wonder that early cinema might have provoked in its viewers.
