The Lunar Rake was produced as a tool in Grumman Corporation's development of the Apollo Lunar Module in 1969. Crafted from aluminum alloy, the folding wire scoop was used during astronaut training to simulate the collection of soil samples larger than one centimeter in diameter from the surface of the moon. Between 1969 and 1972, six Apollo missions brought back 842 pounds of core samples, rock, pebbles, soil, sand and dust from the lunar regolith and are still being distributed and studied today, revealing the history of the Earth, moon, and the solar system.
