A painted rope-tension Military Drum for the Lancashire Fusilliers, painted with the Royal Coat of Arms and striped banded decoration, with the maker's name 'Hawkes & son, makers, Denham Street, Piccadilly, London'.
Founded in 1830 by William Henry Hawkes, it became a famous London firm of musical instrument makers who produced a wide range of woodwind, drums and brass. In 1930, they merged with Boosey and in 1955 took over the famous firm of flute makers, Rudall-Carte. In 1981 they acquired Buffet-Crampon and are now one of the largest makers and suppliers of musical instruments.
