Vik Muniz is known for using materials like wire, sugar, dirt, and chocolate sauce to create images that he then photographs. He describes himself as an alchemist who makes visual magic out of the mundane. Among his most famous works are two detailed replicas of _Mona Lisa_: one made out of jelly, the other made out of peanut butter. Born in San Paulo, Brazil, he now lives in Brooklyn, New York. This ashtray interprets Caspar David Friedrich's _The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog_ (1818, Hamburger Kunsthalle) drawn in cigarette ashes.
