618 Chairs

US$3,000.00

Carlo Scarpa's 618 Chair combines pure functionalism with simple forms. Originally designed in 1964, Meritalia has reintroduced Scarpa's masterpiece in three new wood finishes with upholstery. Scarpa wanted to take a look at the old vocabolario della Crusca and at the etymological dictionary by Battisti in order to find out what they said about the word "furniture". The vocabolario della Crusca, defines the word "furniture" simply as: "to provide what is necessary". The Battisti adds that "furniture" means "to take care".

Furniture is necessary, and there goes the corollary: to take care of furniture, of its preservation and, most of all, of its beauty, which to me sounds like a categorical imperative to our profession. In the same way that we take care of what we need, it seems logical that we take care of beauty, a fact, this one, innate in humankind since its origins." -- Carlo Scarpa, March 1964
