1978 FERRARI 308GTS TARGA

US$109,900.00

Ferrari introduced the stunningly beautiful 308GTS at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 which marked a return to Pininfarina styling following the Bertone-designed Dino 308GT4. Badged as a ‘proper’ Ferrari rather than a Dino, the newcomer had changed little mechanically apart from a reduction in both wheelbase and weight, retaining its predecessor’s underpinnings and transversely mounted 3-litre quad-cam engine. This superbly engineered power unit produced 255bhp, an output good enough to propel the 308GTS to a top speed of 150mph. Bodies were initially constructed in fiberglass, which was the first time this material had been used for a production Ferrari, but the switch was made to steel bodywork after April 1977. Further developments included the introduction of an open-top GTS version with a Targa-style removable roof. 1979 was the last year that Ferrari offered carbureted motorcars with their distinctive burbling sound and much higher horsepower than the fuel-injected models which followed in 1980, but not before 2,185 steel-bodied, carburated 308GTS's were produced.

The example offered here is finished in classic Rosso Corsa Red with an impeccably-kept tan leather interior and Daytona Black accents. With only 16,551 miles, it is an extraordinary original survivor that still retains its original tools and owners manual. Careful examination of this motorcar reveals details that are unique to an original car that cannot be replicated by restoration. It is a prime candidate for Ferrari Classiche certification and all classes of Concours competition including Preservation Class. Detailed service records accompany this car including an $18K invoice which documents a recent complete engine-out service during May 2015. This service inspection included a cam belt change, new belt tensioners and valve adjustment. This is arguably the best example of a Ferrari 308GTS to be found on the market today and we’re proud to offer this investment-grade GTS to the most astute collector or enthusiast who demands the best.
