In 1936, the Mercedes Benz 170 V was presented at the 26th International Automobile Exhibition in Berlin. This model, fitted with a four-cylinder M136 petrol engine, was not only technically and stylistically more modern than its predecessor, the 170 V, but also more powerful. No wonder then that the 170 V was the best-selling Mercedes Benz car during the pre-war period.According to an excerpt from the order book, in May 1939, this vehicle was supplied to the Army High Command in Berlin as a Cabriolet B. According to its previous owner, the car ended up in England at the end of the war where it was later equipped with new bodywork by the firm ‘Hooper’ (London). Of particular note is the basket weave from which the midsection of the body and the seats have been made. The car was owned for many years by a collector, it was later sold to Belgium where it was also restored. This vehicle came to Germany 1990 and was then been sold to me in 2015.From 2015 to 2017, an accomplished and approved mechanic inspected and overhauled this vehicle, as well as remedying any defects.Below are details of the maintenance work on this vehicle and assessments of its condition:Paintwork: the car’s paintwork is in a perfect condition.Body: there are no flaws in the bodywork.Windscreen with wiper: no faults have been found with the glass.Tyres: the 185 SR 15 tyres have a profile of approx. 6 mmPassenger compartment: in England, the car was fitted out with basket weave and the seats covered in red leather. The floor coverings are in a red velour and are impeccable.Dashboard: the dashboard is made of wood and the instruments work perfectly.Lighting and electrical equipment: the lighting was overhauled and the electrical equipment for the most part replaced, the electric starter was replaced with a new one.Engine: the engine was overhauled and the cylinder seals replaced.Engine compartment: the engine compartment is clean with no faults to report of. The bonnet plates close perfectly.Boot: the boot is clean and the hatch closes very well.Radiator and cooling system: the cooling system works fine.Mechanics: the mechanical parts are in a very good condition, the brakes have been completely replaced, and the shock absorbers, along with the axles, are in ok.Vehicle data:Mercedes Benz Roadster 170 V classic car - 1938Seats: 2Doors: nonFirst registered: 01/09/1939Chassis number: 441 473Serial number: 184.458.925Vehicle weight: 980 kgDisplacement: 1697 cm3Transmission: manual - 4 gears plus reversePerformance: 38 PSFuel: ordinary petrolMaximum speed: 108 km/hSteering: this vehicle is right-hand drive (RHD)Inspection: this vehicle was inspected and registered as a vintage car on 21/06/2017 in the cantonal centre of Visp (Valais)!General assessment: According to my research, only 3 of these vehicles were exported to England, making this one of the very few cars of its type. After all of the maintenance work and overhauling that has been done, I can safely say that this vehicle is in a very good, roadworthy condition. This car can be viewed in 3960 Sierre (Valais - Switzerland); test drive possible!
