Mercedes W 107: 350 SL / 450 SLExhaust fumes standards for the American market were stricter and there were various measures taken to meet these requirements, however, this resulted in less power 195 HP (5500 rpm) and less torque 275 Nm (4000 rpm). To compensate for this they developed a 4.5 litre V8 (M117) for the American market, which delivered 217 HP at 5000 rpm and 360 Nm at 3250 rpm. The first W107 models with this engine had a type plate 350SL (C) 4.5 but from November 1972 onward the official designation became 450SL (BM 107.044) and 450SLC (BM 107.024). Due to the high torque of the engine, it was equipped with an automatic transmission as a standard, a manual gearbox was not available.
