A Victorian Presentation Vase & Mirror Plateau
A Victorian Silver Presentation Vase and Mirror Plateau, London, 1846, the mirror plateau, 1856, Maker's mark of Hunt & Roskell.
Height of the vase, 53.3cm., 21cm.
Width of the plateau, 40cm., 15 3/4 in.
Weight of the vase, 8373gr., 269oz. 3dwt.
The massive cast openwork vine pattern two-handled vase on inscribed and crested shaped square base, the underside stamped: '3059'; the shaped square plateau with matching vine pattern border and four cast shell feet, the underside stamped: 'HUNT & ROSKELL LATE STORR & MORTIMER 8605,' wood underside, frosted glass liner.
The inscription reads: ‘Presented to Alexander Findlater Esquire. of Johnstown House, County Dublin, by his partners, whose names are heron inscribed as a token of their respect and esteem for his many excellent qualities May, 29th. 1857. William Todd, John Carmichael, Gilbert Burns, Ivie Mackie, Adam S. Findlater, Henry W. Todd, John F. Corscaden, Thomas Gordon, Bruce B. Todd, Robert Gladstone, John Blood, John Findlater, William Williamson, John Smith, W.T. Mc. Conkey.’
The recipient of this vase was Alexander Findlater (1797-1873), who established the well-known firm of Findlaters, wine merchants, in Dublin in 1823.
