Lawrence Weiner is recognized as a sculptor of language, who stacks and builds words rendered in stark typography to amplify the emotional heft of phrases in isolation. These blocks, like Weiner's body of work, were driven by the joy of language and it multitudinous interpretations. When arranged or stacked, the blocks create different variations on an equation that presents a visual deconstruction of the X and Y chromosomes, which assign gender through the combinations XX, female, and XY, male.
