SEA SIDE HOTEL

Louidgi Beltrame’s work is based on documenting modes of human organisation throughout the history of the 20th century. He travels to sites defined by a paradigmatic relation to modernity: Hiroshima, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Chandigarh, Tchernobyl or the mining colony of Gunkanjima, over the sea off Nagasaki. His films - based on the recording of reality and the constitution of an archive - appeal to fiction as a possible way to consider History.

Sea-Side Hotel

2006

Video, 9’ 30’’, Soundtrack : Jimmy T.

The cathodic ghost of a real estate hostess, is presenting the project of a deserted panoramic hotel along the Pacific coastline in south Japan. The apparitions of Yukiko mark the rhythm of the visit of the building, from the park overgrown with jungle through the reception whose faded red carpet and curtains flapping in the wind seem to wait for improbable visitors. On a TV-snow background, her descriptions sing the praises of the conception and comfort of the facilities of this modernist construction, while the breath of the draughts and the bass frequency of Jimmy T underline the dereliction of the hotel.
