A pioneer of photojournalism and an expert at capturing the quiet, unassuming moments of quotidian life, Robert Doisneau (1912-1944) is considered the preeminent photographer of Paris between the Wars and of the stylish café society epitomized in this 1951 work, taken at a cabaret on the Rue de Lappe. The elegant figure of Mademoiselle Anita sits in a corner booth of La Boule Rouge with her arms gently crossed and her gaze lowered.
