This painting is a fete of light contrasts. The scene reminded me of long walks I made in Switzerland, small paths leading through steep crevices. In this urban landscape, towering buildings replace mountains but the effect is the same. The mirror-like buildings reflect the distant light from an invisible source. It echoes from one side of the street to the other. These unexpected reflections give the painting an extra sense of space. They reduce the solid character of the street fronts. At the moment I observed this scene, there was a solitary figure crossing the street. It’s a cliché but in a town crowded with people, the individual is still the individual and every individual counts.
