Feldschuh Gallery - Gyorgy Kepes, Oval Canvas, 1986

US$8,500.00

In the early 1980s, the Polaroid Foundation invited Hungarian-born painter and photographer György Kepes (1906-2001) to use the 20x24 Polaroid camera. The resulting carefully staged compositions summarize many of his artistic concerns, employing such objects as prisms, flowers, and graphic papers to manipulate the effects of light and form. With_Oval canvas_, he reimagines perception and photorealism. The title implies that the canvas is the ink-stained oval central in the work. However, the graph paper behind the oval is also part of the piece. In this manner, _Oval canvas_ proves to be a work within a work. How meta.
