"Light Side of the Moon I" by Wessel Huisman, 2016, 70 x 100 cm, Acrylic on Canv
US$5,866.24 During my visit, I saw numerous photographs and paintings of the city at night, as seen from the Kowloon side. Nonetheless, I saw an opportunity to use this iconic image in a playful way. What if all of a sudden, the lights and colours were released from their original source and started to wander through the darkness of night? Reflections would emerge from unexpected places. The formal structure of buildings would be loosened. Here and there are hints of Mondrian.

"July 1973" by Wessel Huisman
US$5,866.24 This painting is a fete of light contrasts. The scene reminded me of long walks I made in Switzerland, small paths leading through steep crevices. In this urban landscape, towering buildings replace mountains but the effect is the same. The mirror-like buildings reflect the distant light from an invisible source. It echoes from one side of the street to...

"Friday morning, end of March 1961 around 10.30 a.m." by Wessel Huisman
US$45,500.00 A photograph I took forms the source of inspiration for Hong Kong Airport. In general, halls of airports are oversized constructions built with a minimum of materials. Because of the large open space, paradoxically, the human presence has almost dissolved. It is one great festival of shattered light, reflections and echoes. However, to direct large quantities of visitors, flexible...

"End of November 1978" by Wessel Huisman
US$6,446.41 One morning during my visit, the sky was dark and the streets were lit. The modest colours remind me of 15th century Flemish paintings, where there is scarcely a clear direction of light. I searched for a palette to match this intimate atmosphere. I reduced the natural hues to a blue grey and brown grey. I used the red...

"End of November - beginning of December 1978" by Wessel Huisman
US$6,446.41 For a long time, I have been fascinated by the twilight moment during which the sky is still coloured by the sunset. Simultaneously, artificial light from shop windows and lit interiors becomes more pronounced. I chose a warm burnt umber and a colder blue violet on the colour scale. This painting is a wash of clear warm golden brown...

"End of May 1968" by Wessel Huisman
US$6,446.41 In most of my street views I try ignore a skewed perspective. However in this painting, I was prompted to overemphasise this effect because it makes the two buildings seem as if they’re bending, almost tumbling into a dynamic composition. On the street level, there is a constant flow of people unaware of the clash of giants above their...

"End of June 1973" by Wessel Huisman
US$5,866.24 I was inspired by the rising majestic light on the upper part of the buildings on the right. It makes the towering constructions elegant, proud. Driving along this main axis, the sunlight crosses the road like a waterfall. Strong contrasts between the illuminated sections and the ones in shadow give the painting a dynamic and vital expression.

"End of June 1972" by Wessel Huisman
US$5,866.24 I saw this astonishing play of light, reflection and depth at the entrance of the Great Eagle Centre when I visited the Dutch Consulate General. There was a surprising contrast between the dark, solid construction and the invading light, permeating all directions. In the distance, there is a view of an idyllic garden. I took up the challenge to...

"Beginning of March 1963, on a Saturday afternoon" by Wessel Huisman
US$8,122.48 For the past twenty-five years, old black and white photographs inspired many of my paintings. My appreciation of a painting is not determined by whether the scene is contemporary or not. The paintings of great masters like Rembrandt or Da Vinci represent 16th and 17th century tableaus and even older biblical episodes. This has no influence on the intensity...

"Beginning of March 1962, on a Tuesday afternoon" by Wessel Huisman
US$6,446.41 In this painting the light is very equal, neutral. You can hardly see its origin. The indanthrone blue and burnt sienna form a delicate balance in colour tone and material expression. From very thin watery layers to lines and rectangles that seal off the surface, they emphasise the contrast between the solid material expression of the concrete buildings and...

"Beginning of June 1959, near the train station" by Wessel Huisman
US$5,414.99 I was still very young when I saw this light for the first time. A sky taking an open breath, a superb light echoing other times and places. I am aware that the image of this temple inside the Forbidden City could seem cliché. Its colourful expression and rhythmic patterns gave me the opportunity to release the colours from...

US$5,414.99 An old photograph inspired this work. The presence of porters and rickshaws are a constant element when you see old Hong Kong street scenes. While exploring the town and visiting the new building sites near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, I realised that all architectural achievements are the result of physical human effort. In this painting, I...

"April 1972" by Wessel Huisman, 2016, 70 x 100 cm, Acrylic on Canvas
US$5,866.24 The light in this painting was a great gift. The towers of the main buildings on The Bund behave like willing servants when they catch the last rays of the descending sun. They make the light material, almost as if you could touch it. The result is a heroic impression, emphasising the confident architectural constructions. The grand finale of...
